Improvised Music & Jazz Department
Many of Norway's leading musicians in jazz, pop, rock and improvised music have been educated at the Norwegian Academy of Music.
Our students are given the best lessons and guidance available in order to develop their individual identity in performance and creative practice. While we value practical skill, we encourage stylistic openness and a broad understanding of genre varieties.
The Norwegian Academy of Music offers programmes in Music Performance and Music Education:
- Bachelor Studies in Jazz/Improvisation
- Master Studies in Jazz/Improvisation
- Ph. D. and doctoral level opportunities in Jazz/Improvisation
The jazz student community is a diverse environment with a high degree mutual curiosity and respect between musicians' individual areas of specialization and preference. Instructors and advisors within the Jazz Department are some of the country's best performing artists in improvised music, and together they represent a broad stylistic scope. Students are given a range of opportunities to familiarise themselves with new music and other musicians. In this way they are encouraged to scope out their own paths as performing artists.
Collaboration across disciplines
Collaboration across departments and disciplines is an integral part of the everyday work that goes on at the Norwegian Academy of Music. The Jazz Department students have access to specialised skills and expertise found in other departments, in instrument instruction, composition, music technology, Nordic Folk Music, and other disciplines or areas of specialisation.
