In this project Varkøy focuses on how the concept of Bildung, in contrast to "education as schooling", is a continual process with no final goals or absolute knowledge to reach. Bildung is a way of being rather than of knowing.

When it concerns education we talk about a start and a finish, final goals and absolute knowledge. In this text Varkøy focuses on how the (originally German) concept of Bildung, in contrast to "education as schooling", is about a continual process with no final goals or absolute knowledge to reach. Bildung is more a way of being than a way of knowing; knowledge is integrated into one’s own life.

Relating to one’s cultural heritage, the Bildung process is about life-long “journeys”, meeting and dealing with the unknown. In educational philosophy the concept gives impulses to fundamental discussions concerning the value of art and music in upbringing and education in times of plurality and changes.

The result of this project is a philosophical text on the concept of Bildung.

The text was published in Fleming, Mike, Liora Bresler & John O'Toole (ed.)(2014): Routledge International Handbook of Arts and EducationLondon: Routledge.
