Music Curation and Artistic Identity Formation

Performance Practice for Meaningful Career Development.

With the pandemic-induced shift to digital musical experiences, competition has expanded worldwide. The need to develop the strong artistic identities critical for success as musician entrepreneurs have become more urgent. In alignment with the Norwegian Academy of Music’s strategic goals to develop artistic identities and test artistic processes, this project examines the artistic process of music curation, which anecdotal evidence suggests facilitates artistic identity formation.

Existing literature on music curation as a performance practice touches on how musicians employ curation without addressing why. Using a qualitative method of semi-structured interviews, this project seeks to formalise curation’s support of artistic identity formation and positive career outcomes.
