Music Theory in Conservatoire Education: A Discourse-Oriented Study of Satslære in the Extended History of the Norwegian Academy of Music

Bjørnar Utne-Reitan’s PhD project investigates the role of music theory in the history of music education in Norway, and focuses in particular on the subject commonly called satslære (primarily consisting of harmony and counterpoint).

Utne-Reitan has chosen as case the construction of satslære as part of the professional training of musicians in Oslo, from the end of the nineteenth century until the current situation at NMH. The study will treat a large number of historical sources – mainly formal curricula, textbooks and debates in newspapers and journals. These will be analysed from a Foucauldian discourse-oriented perspective.

The study will be central in the exploration of both the history of the institution and of the subject, provide a framework for understanding current pedagogical practice and be an important contribution to the shaping of future theory education. In order to be able to assess the subject’s place in the conservatoire education of the future, it is a great advantage to have a more in-depth knowledge of its foundation and history. This has previously been granted little scholarly attention in the Norwegian context.
