CEMPE believes that even the most diligent and talented student has improvement potential and that progress is best made in partnership between teacher and student and between students themselves. For that reason, this project sees teachers and students come together for a series of “Music Practice Workshops”. The workshops will try out different forms of group tuition in which the teacher(s) take(s) a particular responsibility for actively including the students in the tuition. The workshops may involve both academy and external teachers as well as collaborations with teachers of other performing arts subjects and subjects such as physiology, sports science and psychology.
These workshops explore techniques for creating musical characters within a piece of music whereby the musician directs and engages personally in a musical game. Working with film directors and actors, professor of percussion Hans-Kristian Kjos Sørensen will be looking at whether musicians can learn from how directors and actors create a character.
Cracking the contemporary code – practice workshops on contemporary music
These workshops explore different practice tools with the aim of improving the students’ performance skills and increasing their understanding of modern music. The project draws on existing contemporary music programmes at the NMH and looks at modern forms of notation, how to practise and understand complex rhythms, new soundscapes and extended performance techniques, software-assisted practice, and improvisation for singers, instrumentalists and conductors. The workshops will be run by postdoc Tanja Orning (cello), postdoc Håkon Mørch Stene (percussion) and research fellow Bjørnar Habbestad (flute).
Timani I, II & III
These workshops explore fundamental movement techniques for musicians in groups of students and groups of principal instrument teachers and students. Associate Professor Vibeke Breian and Tina Margareta Nilssen have developed a range of concepts to make the students aware of how they use their muscles when practising and performing and to enable their teachers to better integrate that awareness in their teaching.
