New electroacoustic work by Natasha Barrett activates the sonic ghosts of Oslo’s Akershus Fortress.

Natasha Barrett

What if we make the background foreground? What if the sounds of the past resonate through the present? What if the hidden details, the disguised features, the traces and the artefacts break out of the everyday noise we tend to ignore and tell a story of space, place and presence?

Presence | Nærvær is an outdoor, site-specific sound art installation that explores the answers to these questions. It reveals the sonic treasures in and around Akershus Fortress by resonating them through a hyper-enhanced version of 'the real', hovering just above the existing background. The public is invited to experience this revealed sound space and their own presence within it.

The work is made using the latest in environmental sound analysis technology and 3D outdoor sound projection. Presence | Nærvær is created by Natasha Barrett as part of the Reconfiguring the Landscape artistic research project based at the Norwegian Academy of Music.
