Course description
The course builds on the courses MUSTEK21 Project Studio or MUSTEK22 Recording Studio, providing a practical and theoretical study of how multiple audio tracks/recordings and audio sources are combined to one or more channels (a mix).

Learning objectives
Upon completion of the course, students are expected to
- have knowledge of the processes involving mixing complex audio
- have knowledge of the use of artificial rooms and other effects
- master different forms of compression on both individual instruments and the mix
Overview
The course covers the mixing technique and refining recorded material to a finished CD master. It also covers sound engineering and focuses shifts between individual instruments and the recording as a whole.
Structure
Projects and group instruction for 90 minutes per week in 12 weeks (fall semester).
Course requirements
Participation in projects is compulsory. More than 20 % of absence from class will normally result in a failing mark.
Process portfolio: Students will assemble a process portfolio including 2 productions. The sound material for the productions will be provided. (Or students may include 1 provided production and 1 production of their own recorded material.) Each production must be mixed by the student using
- housekeeping session
- fading/panning
- individual EQ and dynamics
Deadline: The productions must be submitted to the course instructor by a given deadline. The process portfolio must be completed and approved by 15 December.
Final assessment
All coursework requirements must be approved prior to obtaining a final assessment.
Assessment is based on learning objectives. The final assessment is given as a pass/fail mark based on the exam portfolio. Assessment is done by two internal examiners.
Exam portfolio
Based on the process portfolio students will submit an exam portfolio including:
- One chosen, thoroughly done mix.
- One short reflection paper explaining the mixing process (400 words).

In the case of re-assessment, the same procedures apply.
