Instru­ment Know­ledge

Course description

The course provides a basic introduction to instrumentation/orchestration to give the students an idea of the soundscape presented in the score.

Learning objectives

On completion of this course, the student is expected to

  • demonstrate knowledge of the different instruments’ characteristics and mode of operation

Contents

The course covers

  • instrument knowledge, vocal and orchestral instruments individually and in groups, solo and accompaniment
  • score-reading and score and part layout in ensembles ranging from small groups to large Romantic orchestras with vocal parts, solos and auxiliary instruments
  • various instrumentation techniques

Structure

The tuition is given in groups in the form of lectures/demonstrations.

The students are automatically registered for tuition/supervision and assessment in the subject in line with the progression set out in the individual education plan.

Course requirements

Attendance is mandatory during performances, discussions and evaluations of own and others’ assignments. The semester schedule will state which lessons they are.

Final assessment

All course requirements must be met before the student can be given a final assessment.

The assessment is based on the learning objectives for the course. The course is assessed on a pass or fail basis by the course tutor in the form of an individual evaluation of the student’s level of attainment.

New assessment

In the case of re-assessment, the same procedures apply.
