Forum for Artistic Research – Bachelor

Course description

The students will reflect on their artistic practice, musical choices, processes, context and perspectives.

By investigating musical processes and reflective topics independently and in a group, the students will gain a deeper insight into topics that are especially relevant to musical performance, creativity and artistic innovation. They will also practise and familiarise themselves with methodologies used in artistic research.

The course is open to all students irrespective of genre.

Course tutor: Ingfrid Breie Nyhus

Learning objectives

On completion of this course, the student is expected to:

  • be able to reflect on their musical practice, context, perspectives and choices
  • be familiar with different aesthetic perspectives and know how to relate them to their own practice
  • be able to identify musical problems in their own musical practice and field know what artistic research is and be familiar with examples of projects and working methods
  • be able to discuss and reflect on their own artistic work both verbally and in writing

Overview

The course involves:

  • Reflecting on and sharing the students’ investigative musical processes
  • Discussions on topics such as aesthetics, interpretation, improvisation, tradition, public performance and artistic research
  • Group work, assignments and discussions on the students’ own musical investigations and problems

Structure

The course is given as weekly seminars during the autumn semester. The seminars will involve group discussions and reflective assignments, and the students will demonstrate and discuss relevant investigative performative/creative processes within their groups. The assignments are linked to reflection and trialling in their own musical practice.

Both teacher and students are actively involved in the seminars. The students will take part in discussions and group work. A course schedule will be made available at the start of the academic year.

Course requirements

The students should complete reflective assignments on relevant creative/performative processes during the seminars and as homework. The assignments are stored in a digital folder. The students should actively participate in group discussions on general musical topics and on their own investigative processes.

Active participation in the seminars is mandatory for this course. This normally means that more than 20% non-attendance will normally cause the student to fail the course.

Final assessment

All course requirements must be met before the student can be given a final assessment.

The assessment is based on the learning objectives for the course. The assessment is given as a pass or a fail based on the reflective folder and the student’s active participation in the workshops.
Submission of reflective folder: The folder contains assignments completed during the workshops and as homework. They will include both text and audio/video and should be submitted digitally. The deadline for submitting the reflective folder will be set by the course co-ordinator.

New assessment:
In the case of re-assessment, the same procedures apply.
