Work­shop on per­form­ance and reflec­tion on artist­ic pro­cesses

The course is offered to all instruments on all performance programmes. It is designed to help the students take ownership of their own performance process. The aim is to inspire, further and challenge each other’s musical development through feedback, reflection, peer learning and different working methods. The course is based on a range of feedback models. Multiple teachers from different performance backgrounds will participate.

On completion of this course, the student is expected to

• be able to communicate their artistic processes and ambitions
• be able to reflect on their own performance processes and those of others
• be able to employ different models for giving and receiving feedback
• be able to justify artistic decisions and to contextualise their own artistic practice

The course is given as a workshop in which the students perform, explore, reflect and develop their musical projects. Students and teachers will discuss and explore topics such as quality, context and artistic identity through cross-disciplinary co-operation and feedback models. The students will be working in large and small study groups facilitated by the teachers but with a considerable degree of independence for the students.

The course will enable the students to define their own artistic goals and ambitions and give them a vocabulary for reflection and for giving and receiving justified and nuanced feedback.

The course lasts two semesters and is given as 15 seminars each lasting 3 hours. During the first seminars the students will be introduced to and practise models for feedback and artistic research. Next, the group will be working as a team to address each student’s performance.

Sessions 1–3: Training in and exploration of various feedback models and methods for artistic research.

Sessions 4–11: Workshops in which the students perform for each other and collectively reflect, explore and help each student further develop their performative ideas and projects. A range of models for peer learning, feedback and artistic research will be used.

Sessions 12–15: Presentations of the students’ artistic projects followed by feedback.

1. Attendance and active participation are mandatory for this course. This means that more than 20% non-attendance will normally cause the student to fail the course.

2. The student must prepare and give at least two musical performances.

3. The student must create a project proposal for an artistic project. The submission deadline is 1 December.

4. The student must hold a final presentation of an artistic project. This could be a concert, performance, video, podcast etc. The submission deadline is 12 May.

All course requirements must be met before the student can be given a final assessment.

The assessment is based on the learning objectives for the course. The final assessment will be a pass or a fail and will be given by the course tutor based on an individual assessment of the student’s level of attainment at the end of the course.
