The course focuses on the aural challenges that conductors of various types of ensembles may encounter in their preparations and on the podium.
The course is based on Aural Training II (GEHØR11).
Learning objectives
On completion of this course, the student is expected to
- be able to quickly find their way around a score and render it accurately
- be able to recognise and evaluate what is being performed/sung
- be able to internally realise a score with multiple parts (audiation)
Overview
The learning materials comprise the students’ own repertoire and music from different periods along with practical exercises. Working with both performed and notated music, the students will explore topics such as form, melody, harmony, colour of sound, balance, intonation, rhythm, tempo, phrasing, dynamics, score-reading and the use of tuning forks. Much of the focus will be on paying attention to detail and developing good perception and evaluation skills.
Structure
Tuition takes place in groups. Lectures, discussions and study groups may also be used.
Students with a non-attendance rate of more than 20% lose their right to actively participate in the course and to ongoing assessment and supervision.

The students are automatically registered for tuition/supervision and assessment in the subject in line with the progression set out in the individual education plan.
Course requirements
The student should give two oral presentations to the group, one in each semester. Each presentation should include one five-minute video showing the student directing an ensemble as well as a reflective paper of 400–600 words with associated example scores.
Deadline: All course requirements must have been met by 15 April in the second semester of the course.
Final assessment
All course requirements must be met before the student can be given a final assessment.
The assessment is based on the learning objectives for the course. The course is assessed on a pass or fail basis in the formof an individual evaluation of the student’s level of attainment.
