Key­board instru­ment

Course description

This course is for students whose principal instrument is organ. The course provides an introduction to a secondary keyboard instrument, e.g. harpsichord, piano or harmonium. The students should select an instrument before the course commences.

Learning objectives

On completion of this course, the student is expected to

  • possess an understanding of the characteristics of the instrument
  • master the instrument performance technique
  • have an insight into relevant repertoire and performance practice

Overview

The course involves

  • learning repertoire and technique on a secondary keyboard instrument
  • different types of techniques and playing styles
  • developing stylistic sensitivities in respect of both historical developments and various national styles

Structure

The tuition is normally given individually.

The students are automatically registered for tuition/supervision and assessment in the subject in line with the progression set out in the individual education plan.

Course requirements

At the end of the academic year the student should submit a reading/repertoire list to be approved by the course tutor. The repertoire list should include works in different styles and have a total duration of at least 40 minutes. Some of the repertoire may also be included in the student's chamber music repertoire.

Final assessment

All course requirements must be met before the student can be given a final assessment.

The assessment is based on the learning objectives for the course. The course is assessed on a pass or fail basis in the form of an exam. The assessment is carried out by least two internal examiners.

Practical exam

The student performs an own-choice programme lasting approx. 20 minutes.
