Learning objectives

  • have the ability to collaborate and communicate with musicians
  • be able to clarify their own musical visions for the musicians
  • be familiar with rehearsal procedures

Overview

The course covers the whole process from planning to composing and rehearsing a piece, and the completion of a concert. The course emphasizes that musicians and composers must collaborate and jointly arrive at the final result.

Structure

Students are expected to initiate the rehearsals and performance of the piece. The student is encouraged to make use of the musicians in composing the piece and make revisions based on their insights. A supervisor with expertise in composition will follow the process and be present during at least one rehearsal. The course concludes with a concert/performance/installation.

Course requirements

  1. The course concludes in a performance that may be recorded in audio or video format.
  2. The composer must have 2–3 rehearsals with the musicians before the performance. Student and supervisor will have a conversation about the project after the performance.
  3. The student must write a short documentation note of approx. 300 words about the project. The document must be handed into the course coordinator within the deadline.

Final assessment

All course requirements must be approved prior to obtaining a final assessment.

Students are assessed in correspondence to the learning objectives of the course. The final assessment is expressed with the grades pass/fail, and set by one or more teachers on the basis of an individual assessment of the student’s skills throughout the course period.

New assessment

In the case of reassessment, students must retake the course.
