Arab­ic Music

Course description

The course provides an introduction to basic knowledge and skills in Arabic music traditions.

Learning objectives

Upon completion of the course, it is expected that the student

  • shows basic knowledge about Arabic music traditions
  • documents skills about music theoretical principles in Arabic music
  • masters performance of Arabic music
  • has experiences in adapting Arabic music for their own instrument
  • participates in ensemble playing based on Arabic music

Overview

In the course, lectures on Arabic music tradition and theoretical
principles for the music are given. A selection of music is studied on the student's main instrument, vocally, and on relevant percussion instruments. The students are also expected to adapt music that can be played with the ensemble that the student group forms.

Structure

The course is taught in a group with five gatherings of 180 minutes each. The tuition is organized as lectures, teacher-led study processes, collaborative processes for information gathering and concert visits. In addition, a lot of individual practice and ensemble rehearsals is expected outside of tutition.

Course requirements

  1. Active participation in the course is mandatory. This normally means that absence of more than 20 percent results in the student not passing the course.
  2. Active participation in the final concert is mandatory.

Final assessment

All course requirements must be met before the student can be given a final assessment.

The assessment is based on the learning objectives for the course. The course is assessed on a pass or fail basis by the course tutor in the form of an individual evaluation of the student’s level of attainment.

New assessment

If the student fails the assessment, they must retake the course.
