Course description

Valgemnet skal gi studentene muligheten til å synge i vokalensemble, en på hver stemme, uten dirigent. Studentene vil bli satt sammen i forskjellige konstellasjoner og arbeide fram mot en konsert hvert semester. Repertoaret vil først og fremst, men ikke nødvendigvis være begrenset til, a cappella vokalensemblerepertoar

The course aims to provide students with the opportunity to sing in a vocal ensemble, one on each voice part, without a conductor. Students will be grouped into different configurations and work towards a concert each semester. The repertoire will primarily focus on a cappella vocal ensemble repertoire

Learning objectives

Upon completion of the course, students are expected to

  • has an insight into the repertoire available for vocal ensembles
  • can address vocal and ensemble technical challenges in a vocal ensemble
  • demonstrates competence in musical communication within a vocal ensemble
  • can reflect on relevant aspects of work in a vocal ensemble

Overview

Each singer participates in various ensembles and actively engages in rehearsals, planning, and execution of each semester's concert. The repertoire for the fall semester is selected by the instructors, while for the spring semester, it's chosen by the students/instructors. The teaching consists of a both practical exercises/rehearsals of repertoire and lectures according to the course learning objectives.

Structure

The teaching is organized for 90 minutes a week, with longer rehearsals in connection with the concerts

Course requirements

  1. Participation in the scheduled lessons is compulsory. Absence of more than 20% will normally lead to failure of the course.
  2. Participation in two concerts.
  3. Reflection paper (600 to 700 words). The topic for the reflection paper will be provided by the course instructor. The paper is to be submitted on Canvas by May 15th at 1:00 PM.


Final assessment

All coursework requirements (arbeidskrav) must be approved prior to obtaining a final assessment. Students are assessed in correspondence to the learning outcomes of the course. The final assessment will be given as a mark of “passed”/”failed” for each individual student, which shall be determined on the basis of her or his level demonstrated through the course work.

New assessment

Students failing the course will have to apply to re-follow the course for a new assessment. Students may only re-follow the course if there are available places.
