Course descripton

The course will provide the student with knowledge of sound equipment, digital tools, and project implementation to convey music from an acoustic ensemble.

Learning objectives

Upon completion of the course, it is expected that the student will be able to

  • Transmit an acoustic ensemble in digital audio media
  • Utilize sound equipment effectively and efficiently
  • Plan and execute music production projects within given timeframes
  • Collaborate on projects, both in leadership roles and as team members
  • Demonstrate the ability to document and reflect on their work processes

Overview

The course will include work with

  • Audio recording of acoustic ensembles in concert halls
  • Room acoustics
  • Sound theory
  • Stereo microphone techniques in concert halls
  • Use of support microphones combined with main microphones
  • Formats for digitalized sound
  • Project planning

  • Two full-day workshops.
  • Work in groups
  • Individual work with guidance from supervisor

Students use their own laptop in the course. The student needs internet access to follow the online teaching. The student must have access to a stereo pair of microphones (students at NMH can borrow these).

Course requirements

1. Mandatory participation

Participation in the scheduled lessons is compulsory. Absence of more than 20% will normally lead to failure of the course.

2. Mandatory assignments

The student shall submit the following assignments:

  1. Sound theory
  2. Room acoustics
  3. Stereo microphone technique
  4. Digitized sound
  5. Project

The assignments must be submitted by the deadline to be approved. All assignments must be approved by the instructor by December 1st / June 1st.

Final assessment

All course requirements must be approved prior to obtaining a final assessment.

Students are assessed in correspondence to the learning outcomes of the course. The final assessment will be given as a mark of “passed”/”failed” for each individual student, which shall be determined on the basis of her or his level demonstrated through the course work.

New assessment

Same as ordinary assessment.
