Metal Reeds

Ten performers, positioned in a large circle, around and within the audience. They all play an instrument from the metal reed family: accordions, bandoneons, melodicas, and harmoniums.

– "The rhythms of harmony" is a term I like to use for the sonic artefacts appearing when two or more tones meet in a space, such as beatings, interferences, or combination tones. These artefacts are nothing new – we always hear them, but to make them the central perspective of creation and listening allows for new views on the seemingly simple and known, says harmonium player Ferdinand Schwarz.

This performance explores space and microtonality as a consequence of rhythmic thinking of harmony. It is a recalibrating experience of minimalistic rigour, gradually revealing deep personal and emotive dimensions.
