For centuries, Chopin’s music has captured the hearts of audiences with its poetic melodies and both delicate and dramatic moods. The programme tonight is centred around some of Chopin’s major works: the second and third sonata.
The second sonata in B-flat minor, known for its funeral march and famously described by Robert Schumann as «four of [Chopin’s] maddest children under the same roof». It belongs to the darkest of Chopin’s works. In contrast, the third sonata in B minor, while full of contradictions, ends on a more hopeful note.
To balance out these heavyweights of piano literature, we interweave the evening with several nocturnes and mazurkas.
