Wim Van Hasselt is a trumpeter whose artistic profile unites solo, chamber, and orchestral performance in a richly multifaceted way. The international music magazine Gramophone has described him as “an exceptionally fine player with all the equipment in his armoury to delight, surprise, and challenge the listener at every turn.”
As a soloist, he has collaborated with orchestras and ensembles including the Budapest Festival Orchestra, the Munich Radio Orchestra, and the Amsterdam Sinfonietta. His recordings have received distinctions, including the prestigious Edison Classical Award with his duo ART’uur, and the Prix du Salon of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.
Van Hasselt’s artistic outlook was profoundly shaped by his years as a member of the trumpet section of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam. Earlier in his career, he held a tenure with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra and was accepted into the orchestral academies of the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Stuttgart State Opera. Guest engagements have taken him to the Berlin Philharmonic, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Lucerne Festival Orchestra.
In addition to his performing career, Van Hasselt is Professor of Trumpet at the University of Music Freiburg and the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo. His dedication as an educator is exemplified by his longstanding role as Senior Brass Tutor of the European Union Youth Orchestra, and he has served as a juror at major competitions, including the Jan Koetsier, Zoltán Kodály, and ARD International Music Competitions.
