The main instruments are trumpet, horn, trombone, euphonium and tuba, although students may also choose to specialise in certain period instruments. The Academy has a brass ensemble, symphony orchestra, band, sinfonietta and various student ensembles. NMH Chamber Brass is made up of the academy’s best brass students, while the award-winning wind band Christiania Blåseensemble tours and competes nationally and internationally.

Alternative teaching models and methods are trialled alongside traditional tuition. Workshops and projects challenge both students and teachers to succeed in an ever changing music industry.

Tine Thing Helseth Professor of trompet

The brass teachers have experience from professional orchestras. As well as ensemble activities, including performing together with the students, they also participate in research and development projects at the Academy.

Other leading soloists and orchestral musicians visit regularly to give masterclasses and share their insights into the international orchestra world. The Norwegian Academy of Music has exchange agreements with European conservatoires for students wishing to complete part of their studies abroad.
