In 2017, a new entrance examination in aural skills and music theory was introduced at the Norwegian state institutions for higher music education and at the Barratt Due Institute of Music. The project “Entrance Exams in Aural Skills and Music Theory – a Five‑Phase Project” begins with an evaluation and research study of this exam. The project also examines various factors that influence the entrance examinations, and includes an international perspective to explore how other countries assess and map the prior knowledge of incoming students.
During the academic years 2025–2028, new entrance examinations will be developed. These exams will be created on the basis of experiences and findings from the project’s first three phases.
