Slåttetromme

Course description

The course largely involves performing traditional Norwegian slåtter on a drum, a so-called slåttetromme, based on the Sundvor tradition but also other slåtter by traditional singers and Hardanger fiddle performers. The students will perform the slåtter in groups but also as solo versions.

The course is for students whose principal instrument is percussion.

Course tutor: Kjell Tore Innervik.

Learning objectives

On completion of this course, the student is expected to

  • be able to realise and perform drumming slåtter in the Sundvor tradition as well as selected traditional pieces in the vocal and Hardanger fiddle traditions on the slåttetromme
  • master drumming techniques specific to this repertoire
  • be familiar with different traditions in Norwegian folk music and especially drumming
  • be able to collaborate and perform together with others who are also familiar with the tradition

Overview

The students will be working on the following slåtter:

  • Five drumming slåtter in the Sundvor tradition.
  • Two selected slåtter in the vocal tradition.
  • Three selected slåtter in the Hardanger fiddle tradition.
  • Two selected drumming slåtter from other countries, e.g. Scotland, Switzerland, America.

Structure

The tuition is given in 90-minute group sessions for 12 weeks during the spring semester. Practitioners/teachers of other instruments and traditions will be invited to take part.

Instruments will be made available by the NMH, and the course will be held in the percussion room.

Course requirements

Attendance is mandatory. This means that more than 20% non-attendance will normally cause the student to fail the course.

Up to two performances will be organised during the course. The students must learn the selected slåtter listed above. The students must perform half of the selected slåtter in concert during the course.

Final assessment

All course requirements must be met before the student can be given a final assessment.

The students are assessed in accordance with the learning objectives for the course. The final assessment will be a pass or a fail and will be given by the course tutor based on an individual assessment of the student’s level of attainment at the end of the course.

New assessment

The course must be retaken in full to obtain a new assessment. Students who fail the course will not be given priority for readmission.
