Video for com­posers and musi­cians

The course is aimed especially at composition students and other students who wish to experiment and use video as part of their artistic output.

On completion of this course, the student is expected to

• have gained practical experience of basic techniques such as using a camera, framing, editing, montage and special effects
• be familiar with the relationship between sound and image
• be able to experiment with different aesthetic opportunities involving video and audio
• be familiar with key reference works

Video has almost become an instrument in its own right in contemporary music and modern music performance. The use of video has become an essential part of the work of many composers and musicians. The course introduces the students to the practical and creative use of video as a medium in the form of separate visual experiments and in combination with sound and music, as part of a score and by involving musicians and musical performance. There is scope for both large and small compositions or performative projects.

The course will also give the students basic theoretical knowledge of the use of video, camera, framing, editing and composition of live images. Reference works and examples from modern music, video art (visual art) and film will be discussed.
The students will be able to produce works or small performances under guidance.

The course is given as 9 seminars each lasting 2 hours over one semester. It will include lectures, reviewing different techniques and sharing and discussing short video études.

Active participation is mandatory. This means that more than 20% non-attendance will normally cause the student to fail the course. The students must perform their works at a public performance at the end of the semester.

Final assessment

All course requirements must be met before the student can be given a final assessment. The assessment is based on the learning objectives for the course. The course is assessed on a pass or fail basis by the course tutor in the form of an individual evaluation of the student’s level of attainment.
