Course description
As a musician, whether you are performing or teaching, the importance of sight reading can not be stressed enough. It´s a highly complex activity that involes many different skills. In this course we will methodically develop and improve sight reading facilities, refining the ones we already have some facility with, and developing those that need more attention.
Course coordinator: Brass, Woodwind and Percussion Department, Strings and Harp Department, Conducting, Voice and Church Music Department
Learning objectives
Upon completion of the course, students are expected to
- Read a repertoire of varying difficulty levels
- Improve focus
- Develop a habit of "relaxed concentration"
- Master correct sight-reading, rhythmic precision, dynamics, stylistic detail
- Develop an understanding of the importance of high sight-reading skills
- Relate what they learn to the study of their solo repertoire or chamber and orchestral parts
Overview
Repertoire of increasing difficulty will be read with emphasis on dynamics, stylistic details, rhythmic and note precision, etc. Relevant material is selected to allow the student to prepare for the challenges of a concert-based job market, as well as orchestral parts and chamber music.
Structure
The organization depends on the instrument group (strings, winds, piano, voice, etc.) and will be arranged in various ways. Examples include group lessons that are teacher-led and student-led every other week (guitar), or weekly group lessons (string instruments). It can also be conducted weekly as a one-on-one lesson (piano), or in small groups of 2-3 (harp).
Course requirements
Participation in the scheduled lessons is compulsory. Absence of more than 20% will normally lead to failure of the course.
Final assessment
All course requirements must be approved prior to obtaining a final assessment.
Students are assessed in correspondence to the learning outcomes of the course. The final assessment will be given as a mark of “passed”/”failed” for each individual student, which shall be determined on the basis of her or his level demonstrated through the course work.
New assessment
Students failing the course will have to apply to re-follow the course for a new assessment.
