Rhythmic Train­ing

Course description

In this course, students will work on understanding and performing various rhythmic elements primarily used in a jazz context

Learning objectives

Upon completion of the course, it is expected that the student

  • has insight into rhythmic structure and can analyze and describe rhythm in various types of jazz and improvised music
  • can use appropriate strategies to achieve precise execution of rhythmic figures
  • can read, structure, study, memorize, and sing/play a musical score
  • can perceive, remember, structure, and sing/play/describe/record a musical progression
  • can use rhythm as a conscious and active element in improvised and composed music

Examples are drawn from all relevant musical forms.

Structure

The course is primarily taught in groups twice a week for 45 minutes each session over 22 weeks. Parts of the teaching may also occur on a project basis.

Oral performance and physical coordination are the main methods of work, although we also play some drums, percussion, and other instruments where it is most appropriate. There will be space to try out new things.

Course requirements

Participation in the scheduled lessons is compulsory. Absence of more than 20% will normally lead to failure of the course.

Final assessment

All coursework requirements (arbeidskrav) must be approved prior to obtaining a final assessment.

Students are assessed in correspondence to the learning outcomes of the course. The final assessment will be given as a mark of “passed”/”failed” for each individual student, which shall be determined on the basis of her or his level demonstrated through the course work.

New assessment

Students failing the course will have to apply to re-follow the course for a new assessment.
