Øyvind Mathisen is a trumpeter and composer from Oslo, educated at the "jazzlinja" in Trondheim. With a deep love for the jazz tradition and a solid dose of musical playfulness, he has for several years presented original jazz music at more than 60 concerts, with the ØyvindLAND septet and the Get Your Goat quartet. The Øyvind Mathisen Trio made its concert debut in 2023, and here, the sound of the trumpet is more in focus than ever before.
The trio presents a landscape of melodious music and open atmospheric compositions by Mathisen and bassist Erlend Olderskog Albertsen. The transparent soundscape requires a significant presence from each individual, filling the interaction with crystal-clear harmonic and rhythmic ideas. The band wants to challenge the boundaries of what a jazz trio can be, particularly by exploring the combination of trumpet and string bass. Albertsen's use of the bow opens up exciting harmonic exploration, including inspiration from Mark Turner's musical expression and his ability to explore new harmonic paths.
Patrycja Wybrańczyk is one of the most exciting young drummers on the Oslo scene today, and with a fantastic groove and a sound palette, she acts as a pillar for the trio.
In 2024, the Øyvind Mathisen Trio plays for the first time with the wonderful vibraphonist Rob Waring. Rob Waring has been active on the Norwegian scene for several years. He is, among other things, known for Torgrim Sollid's Søyr, Espen Rud's Small Fish Sextett, Eyolf Dale's Wolf Valley, Elin Rosseland Trio, Jon Eberson Trio, John Surman Quartet, Mats Eilertsen's Rubicon and in his trio with Carl Morten Iversen and Frank Jakobsen.
