The Gift of Listening by Wei Ting Tseng

Cellist, improviser, and composer Wei Ting Tseng plays her final master concert consisting of her own music.

Sara Angelica Spilling

Wei Ting Tseng is a cellist, improviser, and composer. With a background in classical cello, she is now active in the fields of contemporary music, improvised music, jazz and visual art. Her works have been featured in festivals such as Ultima, Only Connect, Nasjonalmuseet, Tegnetriennale, and more.

The concert centers around Wei Ting's latest composition, I Gaven (English: In the Gift)—a work about identity and gratitude. It's about gifts—how we give them, and how we receive them. The piece is inspired by everyday gestures that have shaped her sense of belonging as an immigrant in Norway: a smile, a nod, a simple "thank you." These quiet acts of kindness may seem ordinary, but they hold the power to form connection. In the same way, she views improvisation as a kind of gift, an exchange that transcends language and offers presence, care, and a shared moment of meaning.
