Zoi Efstathiou: Edge of Chaos

Aiming to propose new methods for creating non-linear large-scale, non-linear compositions, Efstathiou will observe the interpolation between states of equilibria and disorder in non-linear and chaotic systems. By mapping the parameters of these complex systems to compositional elements, she will construct material in the form of short pieces for piano that will then be combined to create larger works. Each of these pieces, called a ‘system,’ is identified by specific instructions, but can be morphed in real time by improvisation. The system is ever-evolving, yet static, deterministic, yet unpredictable, composed and improvised, standalone, but can interact with others.
