Doctoral Studies

As a leading centre of research in music education, the Norwegian Academy of Music offers exceptional resources for training scholars. Ph.D. positions and doctoral research fellowships are advertised annually.

The Norwegian Academy of Music offers two programmes at the doctoral level:

The academic research programme leads to a PhD degree. Candidates complete research projects in one of the following areas: Historical and/or Contemporary Performance Practices; Music Pedagogy; Music Therapy. Initial comprehensive studies of 30-40 credits, as well as a written dissertation of original scholarship based on primary materials and its successful defense are required for completion of the programme.

The national Artistic Research Fellowship Programme encompasses research in all art forms. In Norway the programme is considered a terminal education in the Arts, leading to the qualification of Associate Professor. It does not, however, lead to a Ph.D. Initial comprehensive studies of 30-40 credits, and the completion of an independent and original artistic study are required.
