The course covers principles of ensemble direction and fundamental conducting technique.
Learning objectives
On completion of this course, the student is expected to

Overview
The course covers:
- Conveying musical character and personal interpretation.
- Basic principles of communication and leadership.
- Fundamental rehearsal techniques.
- Techniques for conducting in different time signatures, controlling tempo and tempo changes, cut-offs, fermatas.
- Physical exercises for conductors.
- Score study.
- Ensemble-specific issues such as choral intonation, singing techniques, repertoire, bowing techniques.
Structure
The tuition is provided in groups, and the class forms an ensemble for the students to conduct.

The students are automatically registered for tuition/supervision and assessment in the subject in line with the progression set out in the individual education plan.
Course requirements
- Attendance is mandatory. This means that a non-attendance rate of 20 per cent or more will normally result in the student failing the course. The students are expected to participate actively in exercises and activities during the course.
- Internal test. The student will be asked to conduct a piece and answer questions from the course tutor. The test is held near the end of the class ensemble semester.
Final assessment
All course requirements must be met before the student can be given a final assessment.
The assessment is based on the learning objectives for the course. The course is assessed on a pass or fail basis by the course tutor in the form of an individual evaluation of the student’s level of attainment.
