Singing for Instru­ment­al­ists

  • Year of study: Two semesters, fall and spring.
  • Final assessment: Assessment by the course instructor.
  • Language of instruction: Norwegian/English.

Course description

The course is aimed towards instrumental students who wish to learn basic singing technique and song interpretation.

The course can not be chosen by students who have singing (classical or jazz) as their main instrument.

Responsible department: Conducting, Voice and Church Music Department.


Learning objectives

Upon completion of the course students are expected to

  • master basic vocal techniques associated with relaxation, breathing, support and sound
  • be able to use vocal techniques in relation to playing their own instrument
  • have acquired a repertoire of solo pieces and vocal exercises

Overview

  • Elementary anatomy and physiology of the voice.
  • Basic singing technique.
  • Solo and vocal exercise repertoire.

Structure

19 individual lessons á 22,5 minutes will be given throughout the academic year, as well as 2 introductory group lessons (á 45 minutes).

Course requirements

Attendance and active participation is compulsory.

Final assessment

All coursework requirements must be approved prior to obtaining final assessment.

Student assessment is based on the learning objectives. Final assessment will be given as a pass/fail mark, which will be determined by the course instructor based on each student’s level of achievement throughout the course period.

New assessment

Students who do not pass the course must take an exam (20 min. concert with a repertoire of the student's choice and demonstrate vocal exercises), which will be assessed by minimum two internal examinators.
