Continuing Studies in Contemporary Music Performance

  • Year of study: Two semesters, fall and spring
  • Language of instruction: Norwegian or English

Admission requirements

Bachelor's degree in Performance, all genre specializations. Applicants are ranked, if necessary, according to the number of years of completed education in music performance. Students at NMH who choose the course as an elective have first priority for a place in the course.

Programme description

Performance is central to this programme, in which students work on contemporary music repertoire for their own instrument and ensembles. They explore their instruments in new ways through many different combinations of theory and practice.

The programme focuses on rehearsal and knowledge of central repertoire, as well as knowledge of various aesthetic, cultural, social and political trends within contemporary music. The programme gives the student a toolbox to meet contemporary music.

Learning objectives

Upon completion of the programme, the student is expected to

  • be able to study and interpret contemporary music independently and creatively
  • have knowledge of repertoire from the relevant time period
  • have knowledge of the historical lines within contemporary music from the dissolution of tonality to the present day - based on the repertoire for their own instrument
  • have insight into new ways of notation, new instrumental techniques, electronics as an extension of the instrument, as well as aesthetic, compositional and dramaturgical perspectives on music
  • have insight into co-creative processes within improvisation and composition

Organisation

The study is organized as a part-time course over two semesters. Tuition is given weekly with 2.5 hours of teaching per week over one academic year. In addition, students will receive supervision in chamber music as well as individual supervision. Appointments will be made directly with the respective supervisor.

Assessment

The Academy’s course portfolio is comprised of courses that use the marks “pass/fail” and courses that use marks on a scale of A to F, where E is the lowest passing mark. The individual course descriptions state which system of marks will be used.

Further details on assessment and examination are provided in Chapter VI of the Regulations Governing the Programmes of Study at the Norwegian Academy of Music (only in Norwegian at lovdata.no).

A final transcript of records will be issued when the student has completed the programme. All courses which are part of the study programme, as well as the marks and number of credits, will be stated on the transcript.

Education quality assurance

The Academy has a system for educational quality assurance and development that applies to all aspects of the education provided.

Students play a vital role in these efforts by, among other things, participating in student evaluations of courses and programmes.
