Negotiations – gender and identity in Norwegian music history

How do we understand, or have we understood, Norwegian music history, and what roles do gender and identity play in this understanding?

The project examines how music history is told and how we can understand gender and nation within a Norwegian music historical context.

The book project Negotiations – gender and identity in Norwegian music history aims to produce and communicate new knowledge about music in Norway, spanning genres and eras. We also seek to contribute to a discussion on how music history is conveyed in Norway today.

The contributors are researchers and musicians with backgrounds in Norwegian traditional music, art music, jazz and popular music. The publication will include both peer-reviewed and practice-based texts, which take a more open, essayistic form. The publication will feature a wide range of methodological approaches, including historiographical critique of archival studies, examinations of learning and teaching practices, mapping of master’s concert repertoire, and musical analysis.

The book will be published in Norwegian by Cappelen Damm Forskning in spring 2027.
