Simon Løffler: Becoming Animal

Simon dressed as a swan is standing on a small stage.

The composer Simon Løffler studies how the aesthetic behaviour of animals can inform a compositional practise.

Field of study: Artistic Research

Summary

The project seeks to explore and potentially dissolve the boundaries between the musical behaviour of animals and humans. Starting from the basic question of how the ritualistic/aesthetic behaviour of certain animal species can be transferred into a musical performance practice, it is Løffler's ambition to open up the notion of what a musical body is and can be.

The main methodologies of the research are:

  1. First, to cultivate an imaginative awareness towards non-human bodies and their affinity with the human.
  2. Second, to explore how the human musical body can extend towards those of other species.
  3. Third, to establish a composition practice where bodies can collide and interact affectively, akin to music.

Documentation

The project is documented in Research Catalogue.
