What can music therapy offer children and adolescents in paediatric palliative care in hospital-at-home settings?

Field of study: Music Therapy

Summary

This qualitative multiple-case study highlights the role of music therapy in supporting children and adolescents in paediatric palliative care within hospital-at-home settings, underscoring its significance for advancing practice and research in this field.

Research Question

Guided by a hermeneutic-phenomenological approach, the study addresses the research question: What can music therapy offer children and adolescents in paediatric palliative care in hospital-at-home settings?

The empirical material

The empirical material comprises five participants aged 3–18, each engaging in three music therapy sessions in hospital-at-home. Data were collected through 360-degree video recordings of 15 sessions, complemented by observations and field notes, with one sequence from each participant analysed in depth to explore musical and interpersonal dimensions and elements contributing to increased vitality.

The study employed Interpretative Phenomenological Video Analysis (IPVA), enabling micro-level exploration of shared musical engagement.

The project is conducted in collaboration with Akershus University Hospital (Ahus).

The study will be documented with three articles and a linking text ("kappe").
