Course description
Real-time music – free classical improvisation – is music improvised at the moment. The course focuses on improvisation with reference to, and repertoire associations from, classical music. This is a completely new way of working with classical ensemble music. What happens when you skip the composer and the conductor in a wind ensemble and let musicians make all artistic decisions in both rehearsals and concerts?
The course is open to all classical wind and percussion students.

Learning objectives
On completion of the course, students are expected to
- be able to create music that is improvisation based
- be able to express their own musical ideas through their principal instrument
- be able to take independent artistic decisions in real-time
- possess the ability to listen actively and react promptly
- be able to give a response on their principal instrument based on their musical ear
- be able to give and receive artistic feedback
Overview
Students will develop their abilities in taking independent artistic decisions. Central to the course is improvisation, active listening, ear-training with the instrument, composition, orchestrating, harmonics and general ensemble musicianship.
Structure
The project is planned for week 7 in 2018 and consists of four rehearsals lasting four hours each in preparation for a freely improvised concert.
Course requirements
- Compulsory attendance to all rehearsals.
- Participation in one concert.
Final assessment
All course requirements must be fulfilled and approved before the student is given a final assessment.
Student assessment is based on the learning objectives. The final assessment will be given as a pass/fail mark, which will be based on each student’s level of achievement throughout the course period.
New assessment
In the case of re-assessment, the entire course must be retaken (one project).
