His­tory of Opera

  • Year of study: Year 1, over two semesters.
  • Final assessment: Assessment by the course instructor.
  • Prerequisites: Admission to a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree programme at NMH.
  • Language of instruction: Norwegian/English.

Course description

This is a required course for students pursuing the concentration Opera Répétiteur as part of the Master’s Degree Programme in Music Performance.

It is also offered as an elective course for other students on both the Bachelor and Master level. The course studies and analyses various works from the history of opera and theatre music, as well as performance practice.

Learning objectives

On completion of the course, it is expected that the student will:

  • have gained an overview of the history of opera and theatre music
  • have acquired knowledge about performance practice
  • be able to analyse works of opera and theatre music

Structure

Block instruction in a seminar format.

Students have registered automatically for instruction/supervision and assessment in the course in accordance with the study progress requirements set out in the individual education plan.

Course requirements

Requirements for this course are stated in the annual/semester plan.

Final assessment

All course requirements must be fulfilled and approved before the student is given a final assessment.

Student assessment is based on the learning objectives. The final assessment will be given as a pass/fail mark, which will be determined by the course teacher.

As an alternative, the student may take a test on the course material. Before the student is allowed to take the test, a repertoire/reading list that corresponds in size and level to the course requirements set out in the semester plans must be approved.

In the case of re-assessment, the same requirements as for the alternative test will apply.
