Jazz Arran­ging

  • Duration: Two semesters, autumn and spring.
  • Final assessment: Assessment by the course instructor.
  • Language of tuition: Norwegian and English.

Course description

The course aims at providing specialisation in arranging for students of improvised jazz. We will study basic techniques and approaches by listening to examples and examining scores. The main content of the course is students’ work with their own arrangements.

Learning objectives

After completing the course the student is expected to

  • be able to document the knowledge of and skills within a variety of arranging techniques
  • show an ability to carry out independent creative work
  • be able to arrange, create and assess his or her own scores for a variety of instrumental and vocal ensembles

Overview

The students work with practical jazz theory and arranging for the entire academic year.

Structure

Instruction is given in the form of group lectures and in smaller groups. Other lectures, discussions and symposiums may be arranged. The students will have the opportunity to submit and receive feedback on practice assignments.

Course requirements

The subject teacher will assign a number of practice tasks, of which 80% must be carried out. In addition, the student must attend at least 80% of the classes.

Final assessments

The student is assessed in relation to the learning objectives of the course. The final assessment is a pass/fail grade and is given on the basis of a two-part internal examination. The assessment is made by the subject instructor.
