Ingfrid Breie Nyhus is a pianist and a composing performer, and works within folk musical and contemporary practices. Her background is from a folk music family and from classical piano studies in Norway, Finland and Germany. She has received several awards for her performances, works and recordings, such as the Norwegian Soloist Award, the Norwegian Grammy, and Work of the Year from the Norwegian Composers' Association. She has performed as soloist with orchestras such as the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, The Norwegian Radio Orchestra and the Trondheim Soloists, and she regularly performs at international venues for folk music, contemporary music, classical music and improvised music. Among her central works is the "Slåttepiano" music, where she transforms Norwegian folk music into pianistic improvisations. She has a Ph.D in Artistic Research, "A Play with Traditions" (2011-2016), and more recently, "(un)Romantic/ Improvising Interpretation" (2021-2024) has been a larger Artistic Research project together with Live Maria Roggen at NMH. Ingfrid Breie Nyhus has been active in several duties connected to artistic research and pedagogical development work. She was Deputy Director in CEMPE (Centre for Excellence in Music Performance Education) 2018-2023.
