Andreas Berg: Quality and value in improvised rhythmic music in upper secondary school

How do teachers and students assess the quality and value of improvised (rhythmic) music in "musikklinja" in upper secondary school?

Field of study: Music Education

Summary

The project seeks to understand how teachers and students assess quality and value in improvised rhythmic music at upper secondary school and to analyze how quality and value are created through discourse. The approach will be mainly through rhythmic music, preferably jazz and improvisation in pop music, although improvisation is not limited to these genres. The background for the project comes from the researcher's interest in improvisation, imagination and assessment, as well as various paradoxes that emerge in the research literature. The research design is a qualitative study, where the data comes from interviews, focus groups and case studies. The theoretical framework is Laclau and Mouffe's discourse theory, which will be used to examine which hierarchies, values and taken-for-granted truths can be found in the discourse.
