Applied Per­cus­sion

Course description

The course introduces the students to melodic percussion as a utility instrument.

Learning objectives

On completion of this course, the student is expected to

  • demonstrate skill in performing from basic shorthand notation and knowledge of the principles of accompaniment
  • master basic transposition of melodic and harmonic structures
  • be able to improvise using a chord chart
  • be able to perform from basic shorthand notation

Overview

Depending on the student’s previous experience, they will practise melodic percussion for use as a utility instrument.

Structure

The tuition is normally provided in groups of three students. Students with a non-attendance rate of more than 20 per cent will lose their right to actively participate in the course and to ongoing assessment and supervision.

The students are automatically registered for tuition/supervision and assessment in the subject in line with the progression set out in the individual education plan.

Final assessment

The assessment is based on the learning objectives for the course. The course is assessed on a pass or fail basis by at least two internal examiners following a practical exam where the student performs a programme selected in consultation with their course tutor.

New assessment

In the event of a fail, the student must retake the practical exam.
