Bachelor of Music in Church Music

The programme is especially aimed at preparing the student for work in the Norwegian Lutheran Church.

The Church Music programme provides a broad professional background for music work in Norwegian churches and congregations. Focus is placed on performance areas such as solo and liturgical organ playing, improvisation and choir conducting, and when combined with music theory subjects, this results in comprehensive musical education. In addition, the programme includes several subjects designed specifically for church music studies, which will give you insight into religious practices, parish work and liturgical activities, such as church music forums, knowledge of the organ, repertoire and score study, singing, applied piano, Bible study and catechism, and knowledge of church services and psalms.

Pilot: Bachelor of Music in Church Music with specialization in Choral Conducting

NMH is looking into the possibility of creating a study program in choral conducting and church music that leads to cantor competence. To gain knowledge about the need for such education, we are admitting two students to a pilot programme in the academic year of 2025-26. The students will follow the regular curriculum for the Bachelor of Music in Church Music, but will receive less guidance in organ playing. In return, the students who are approved for this arrangement, will receive extra guidance in choral conducting, and will have practice with the choirs in Oslo Cathedral.

To choose the option, you must state this in your application form.
