Master of Music in Composition

The Master in Composition takes place in the rich musical environment of Oslo. All our learning activities are centred on developing the student’s own compositional voice, and building skills needed to take part in an international musical discourse. We offer four areas of focus: Acoustic composition, interdisciplinary composition, creative music technology and jazz composition.

Master’s Programme in composition with specialisation in interdisciplinary composition

Compositional studies in the interdisciplinary fields is based on the students ongoing navigation between different artistic disciplines, which can include instrumental practices as well as a wide range of other approaches. Music theatre, movement, visuality, instrumental innovation, collaborative processes and site-specific praticises are but a few examples among many. The students have the opportunity to work individually and collaboratively in various contexts. These may include music theatre and choreography projects in collaboration with other art academies.

Master’s Programme in composition with specialisation in acoustic composition

Acoustic composition offers a wide array of training and practice within the field of instrumental and vocal composition. The studies are organized as a combination of one-to-one lectures, seminars and projects based on the student’s own work. We collaborate with professional soloists and ensembles, and offer hands-on experiences within a broad field of contemporary music. Our recent collaborators include Rei Nakamura, Heather Roche and orchestras like the Oslo Philharmonic and The Norwegian Wind Ensemble. Oslo also offers an array of internationally renowned ensembles, and we have frequent partnerships with different chamber ensembles

Master’s Programme in composition with specialisation in creative music technology

The Master in Composition with a specialisation in Creative Music Technology is aimed at composition students who wish to work with an expanded range of materials and approaches within an electroacoustic and music technology–oriented context.

The foundation of the programme is the composition of art music, but it extends to include areas such as instrument design, electroacoustic composition, sound installation, video, electrical engineering, experimental performance practice, and creative programming. The goal of the specialisation is to provide students with both fundamental and advanced technical skills that are relevant to their individual artistic practice within this field.

Master’s Programme with specialisation in jazz composition for large ensembles

When specializing in jazz composition, you will compose music that is performed by internal and external orchestras. Our professional partners are currently The Norwegian Wind Ensemble and The Norwegian Radio Orchestra, as well as the internal projects with NMH Big Band in various formats and the Talent development program (TUP). Part of the study is in collaboration with the continuing-studies in Rhythmic Ensemble Conducting and Jazz Composition. The students shape their own artistic projects, often based on their own ensembles, and a written thesis. The supervisors for these studies are currently Helge Sunde and Geir Lysne.
